The partisan debate on voting by mail continues, and Republican U.S. Senator, Chuck Grassley, is saying there is no need to change the state’s current system, pandemic or not. Iowa Secretary of State, Paul Pate, will be mailing out ballot request forms to every registered voter for the November election. “Iowa’s current absentee ballot system allows anyone who wants to vote by mail the option to do so. Just fill out the request form, which is also available online,” Grassley says. The option to vote in person will remain viable as well. Grassley says there has been a lot of misinformation presented that would make citizens believe a federal intervention is needed to vote by mail, but this is simply not true in Iowa or in other states. Every state has a mail-in system of some form or another. The flaws with the proposed system according to Grassley are that registered voters who have moved or even died will still be included and the option to vote in person nullified. “Requiring every state to replace their current voting systems, including their current absentee ballot systems, with a whole new centralized, mail-only system this close to an election is a recipe for disaster,” Grassley said in prepared floor remarks Tuesday. “Every Iowan who wants to vote absentee in November can do so, and those who want to vote in person, can also do so safely. It is your choice and should remain so.”
