A Jefferson man accused of theft via bank fraud was taken into custody by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office over the weekend on an outstanding arrest warrant. According to Carroll County District Court records, a bench warrant was issued on July 30 for 33-year-old Juan Angel Guzman after he failed to comply with a summons to appear for fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor. He was arrested Saturday at the Greene County jail, where he was being held on separate charges of ongoing criminal conduct, a class B felony, and forgery, a class D felony. The Carroll County charges stem from an investigation by the Carroll Police Department into a June 16 incident in Carroll. Authorities allege Guzman fraudulently deposited $7,000 into a friend’s account at Availa Bank and later withdrew over $400 without the victim’s knowledge or permission. Guzman was released on his own recognizance after appearing before a magistrate. His next Carroll County District Court hearing is scheduled for Aug. 20.
