Glidden City Council To Look For Cost Savings After Bids For Wastewater Project Come In Slightly Over Estimates

The Glidden City Council opened bids for the proposed $4.6 million wastewater lagoon at their meeting Monday night with the lowest coming in very close to the project engineer’s most recent estimate. According to Administrator, Brooke Peterson, three contractors submitted bids: King Construction of Wall Lake, Woodruff Construction of Fort Dodge and Synergy Contracting of Altoona. King Construction was the low bid by $81,000 at $4.859 million. Peterson says this is about five percent above their latest figures.

While the wastewater bids were opened Monday, the city council has not yet formally selected a contractor. Peterson says their next step is to meet with the engineering firm, Veenstra & Kimm, to identify any potential cost saving measures.

A construction schedule is difficult to estimate before a contract is awarded with work likely beginning next year. In addition to needing to approve a bid, Peterson says there is still prep work to do at the future lagoon site southeast of town.

The majority of the project will be funded through Iowa’s State Revolving Fund (SRF), and the city council will be holding a public hearing on the loan disbursement agreement at their next meeting.
