Carroll Woman Struck By Truck While Walking Dog Suffers Serious Injuries

A Carroll woman suffered serious, but non-life threatening injuries after being hit by a pickup truck early Tuesday morning. The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene on 110th Street, just west of Noble Avenue northwest of Lidderdale at approximately 1:48 a.m. Thirty-four-year-old Sonya May Smires was walking her dog when 49-year-old Lonnie John Kastle, who lives with Smires, went out looking for her. Kastle told authorities that as he was traveling on 110th Street in a 2003 Ford F-350, Smires appeared in front of him dressed in dark clothing in the middle of the unlit road. Kastle immediately applied the brakes, but struck Smires with the front driver’s side of the truck. The vehicle was a manual transmission and when Kastle put it in neutral and jumped out, it rolled backwards and entered the south ditch, hitting and damaging a fence. The initial investigation found that Kastle’s report of how the incident likely occurred jives with evidence found at the scene. Kastle was not driving impaired. Smires was transported to St. Anthony Regional Hospital by Carroll County Emergency Medical Services. There was an estimated $4,500 in damage to the Ford F-350 and about $50 to the fence owned by Joshua Hoffman. The Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene.
