Have Fun, But Be Safe This Labor Day Weekend

The forecast is for warmer temperatures this Labor Day weekend, leading many people to Iowa’s state parks and waterways for this traditional last blast of summer. With thousands expected to travel to Iowa’s outdoor destinations, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reminding everyone that safety should be the first thought when boating or paddling, swimming, hiking and camping. They have provided tips for all of these popular activities. When boating, the vessel must contain a wearable life jacket for each passenger and those 12 and under are required to wear them while out on the water. Avoiding peak boating times and refraining from alcohol consumption can greatly reduce the risk of accidents. The state’s Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) limit of 0.08 applies for boat operators as well. All boaters, paddlers and swimmers are reminded to obey all posted signs and warnings. With a statewide shortage of rainfall this summer, water levels are very low and kayakers and paddlers could become stranded. Be sure to check river conditions before putting in by following the link included below. Iowa’s public beaches do not have life guards, so when at the beach or swimming, keep children within arms-reach at all times, stay with a buddy and stay within the roped area of lakes. Hikers should not go out alone and should always have some means of communication with them in the event they become lost or need help. Wear proper clothing and shoes for a hike and stay hydrated. Campers and park visitors are asked to slow down on park roadways and be respectful of neighbors and other park visitors. More safety tips can also be found here.

Because the beaches are busier this summer, staff are encouraging visitors to utilize the non-peak times and days. For the busier beaches/parks, the non-peak days usually include Sundays through Thursdays, and Fridays before 5:00 pm. If you plan to go to the beaches on Saturdays, the non-peak hours are usually before noon.
Parks staff may temporarily close parking lots when they become full and limit the number of visitors at that point. The DNR recommends visitors go to another nearby park or beach that is not as heavily populated. Visitors are reminded to only park in designated parking spaces. All violators will be cited by staff.
STATE PARKS/CAMPGROUNDS SAFETY
