Landus Cooperative’s more than 600 employees serve over 7,000 farmer-owners through 59 customer locations across 26 counties in Iowa. Regional Sales Manager for the southeast region, Matt Brown, explains the methodology, saying they utilized data gathered from 35 counties and 278 townships. Brown points out that yields they presented on Wednesday do not include the derecho factor.
Two samples of corn and soybeans were collected from each township and a population count done with soybeans. For corn, population and total kernel count were used to calculate yield. In the northwest region, which includes Sac and Calhoun Counties, Stacy Raasch, a grain marketing advisor, says they are being hit hard by the drought.
Raasch says after the impact of the drought, hail and derecho, questions remain as to whether or not they will be able to maintain yield estimates. Agronomist, Larry Christensen, says the southwest region of Carroll, Audubon, Crawford, Greene and Guthrie Counties saw wide changes in variability in corn yields and soybeans impacted by the adverse 2020 weather.
Agronomist, Dave Lemke agrees, saying soybeans hit a wall in the past week with hot, dry conditions that also added more stress to corn.
