The Storm Lake Police Department is working with residents and business owners to fight crime within their community. The new initiative, called S.C.R.A.M., Surveillance Camera Registration And Mapping, allows the public to register the location of their surveillance systems with the department. When a crime does occur, officers will be able to identify cameras in the location of the incident and use the captured images to follow-up on leads. Registration does not provide direct access, rather an officer will contact the S.C.R.A.M. registrant and ask them to check their system for a specific date and time for the suspected activity. If necessary, the Storm Lake Police Department would request a copy of the video to be used as a part of their investigation and/or as evidence in a court case. Registration in the program is voluntary and can be withdrawn at any time. There is no cost associated with participation. The goal of this initiative is to not only assist after a crime has occurred, but to also act as a deterrent in the ongoing promotion of public safety through collaboration between law enforcement and the citizens they serve.
