Ronald Doyle Smith, age 83, of Coon Rapids, IA, passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020 at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, September 22, 2020 at the Coon Rapids American Legion with Rev. John Kult officiating. The family will greet friends for one hour prior to the service and a reception will follow. Ron was born on July 3, 1937 on his family’s farm north of Coon Rapids, IA, and he was the son of Frank and Evelyn (Mitchell) Smith. He grew up on the farm and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1953. Following high school Ron worked as a lineman for the railroad. He then worked for Iowa-Illinois Telephone Company for many years. He also had his own telephone repair company, Smitty’s Phone Service. Ron also worked in the shop at Garst and Thomas Seed Company. He was married to Janice Darlene Long May 2, 1958 at the First Christian Church in Coon Rapids. Ron enjoyed playing cards, shooting pool, golf, family reunions, and harassing people.
Ron is survived by his children and their families: Mike Smith (Deb) of Coon Rapids, IA, and Tim Smith (Sue) of Somers, IA, Peggy Kautzky of Princeton, IL, Kevin Long of Simi Valley, CA, Jim Long (Kathy) of Coon Rapids, IA; ten grandchildren; twenty six great-grandchildren; a son-in-law Ed Kautzky of Coon Rapids, IA; a sister Gayle Schultz of Adel, IA; a brother Roger Smith of Littleton, CO; two brothers-in-law: Alan Long (Marilyn) of Bayard, IA, and Larry Long (Linda) of Bayard, IA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Evelyn Smith; his mother and father-in-law Clifford and Mozelle Long; his daughter Tammy Kautzky in 2006; a sister Beth Shutt; a brother Wesley Smith; grandson Jeffrey Long; and his wife Janice in 2011.
