Newton Man Accused Of Stealing Over $1,500 From Carroll Walmart Makes Initial Appearance In District Court

A Newton man accused of stealing more than $1,500-worth of goods from the Carroll Walmart earlier this year made his initial appearance in Carroll County District Court last week. Thirty-nine-year-old Jeffrey William Trent faces one count of second-degree theft, a class D felony. The charge stems from an investigation by the Carroll Police Department into an incident on April 13. Authorities allege Trent entered the store, loaded numerous items into duffel bags and left the building. The value of the items stolen totaled $1,599. Trent was taken into custody at the Jasper County jail by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office on Oct. 1 on an outstanding arrest warrant. His arraignment hearing is scheduled for Oct. 22. A class D felony carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and $7,500 in fines.
