Storm Lake Man Faces Charges After Allegedly Carrying Pellet Gun Through BVU Campus

A Storm Lake man has been taken into custody after his actions put Buena Vista University’s (BVU) campus into lockdown Tuesday night. The Storm Lake Police Department was dispatched to campus at 9:24 p.m. on a report of a suspicious individual on the premises. Campus security informed officers of a male on campus that appeared to be carrying a BB or pellet gun. When confronted by security personnel, the individual, identified as 19-year-old Ryan Anthony Haynes of Storm Lake, fled on foot. As a precaution, BVU administrators issued a shelter-in-place order for students and staff on campus. The department’s K-9 unit and a drone from the Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office were called in to assist in the search for Haynes. He was located at approximately 10:36 p.m. and taken into custody. Officers recovered a pellet gun and a container of prescription pills at the scene. Haynes was transported to the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries sustained during his attempt to avoid law enforcement. Authorities say Haynes is not enrolled at BVU and believe he was simply walking through the area. The shelter-in-place order was lifted at 11:05 p.m.
