Although 98th Annual Carroll Fire Department Dance Is Cancelled, Firefighters Will Still Fundraise For Equipment Purchases

The annual Carroll Volunteer Fire Department dance has been a staple fundraiser for the department for decades. But in its 98th year, firefighters have been forced to cancel the event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Department member, Dan Hannasch, says they will all miss the ability the dance provides them to touch base with the community.

Hannasch says they will still be trying to raise money while maintaining safe social distances.

Fireman, Brad Ruhnke, says this is one of the biggest fundraisers of the year and the money is used to purchase equipment.

Ruhnke says they currently have all hydraulic extraction equipment. The newer models are battery operated and much easier to use, particularly when the tools are needed in difficult environments. They have previously used the money to buy boots and other gear, air packs, stabilization tools for accidents and more. Jeremy Heinrichs explains the ways residents can donate to ensure the department continues to be well-equipped.

And though the dance has evolved over the years from a traditional ball format with formal attire, to the current more relaxed social gathering, all three firefighters say they will deeply miss the excitement of getting so many people together and the fun they have every time.
