CCSD Administrators Meet With City Officials To Discuss Safety Measures Following Tuesday’s Shooting

Photo: Three women and one man were arrested Wednesday for a shooting overnight in the 500 block of E. 18th Street in Carroll. Myers and Garnett were also involved in an altercation involving guns on Monday, Oct. 5 at the same address. A mugshot of the male involved, 31-year-old Cliff Derek Urban, is not available at this time.

On the heels of a shooting at an apartment complex across the street from a Carroll school, Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, reached out to parents. An email was sent Wednesday evening in which Berlau updates parents and guardians about their efforts to keep the Fairview Elementary building “an emotionally and physically safe place for students.” Berlau says even though the incident did not occur on school property or during school hours, the potential for a negative impact still exists, as it did on Monday, Oct. 5 when an altercation involving guns at the same location during school hours necessitated a facility lockdown. School representatives met with Carroll officials on Wednesday to evaluate the situation and discuss steps they can take to ensure safety. “While we don’t have all of the answers at this time, we are working hard and we will be coordinating teams to evaluate and help determine the best avenues that will help us in our work going forward,” Berlau writes. He adds they understand the concerns of community members, but right now the best course of action is vigilance and reporting of any suspicious activity to the proper authorities. “From our meeting today, we know that our local police department is working hard and they patrol the area regularly,” Berlau says. “We believe our students and staff are safe at school.” Carroll Broadcasting will be reaching out to the Carroll Community School District administration to bring you more details as the situation and the response unfold.
