CCSD Superintendent Says District Is Working With City To Address Safety Concerns At Fairview Elementary

Administrators from the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) met with officials from the City of Carroll to discuss safety concerns at Fairview Elementary School following several recent incidents at a nearby apartment complex. The Fairview Elementary building was put into lockdown on Monday, Oct. 5 after two women brandished firearms during a dispute in the 500 block of E. 18th Street. Law enforcement were called to the scene just before midnight on Tuesday after a 31-year-old male from Ames sustained non-life-threatening gunshot wounds to the legs. CCSD Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says they are aware many people in the community are worried about student safety.

In response to those concerns, officials from the district, including Berlau, elementary administrators and a board member, met Wednesday with City Administrator, Mike Pogge-Weaver, and Chief of Police, Brad Burke, to discuss the circumstances and determine their next steps. Berlau says the hour-long meeting will serve as a starting point as they move forward together.

The City of Carroll announced Thursday evening the Carroll Police Department are now devoting at least one on-duty officer to the property 24 hours per day. He adds they will continue working with city officials and predicts it will be a frequent topic of discussion at council meetings for quite some time. Berlau says the biggest takeaway from the meeting is that both entities are aware of the issue. Most importantly, he says parents can be sure of their child’s safety while at any of the district’s attendance centers.

The school board is scheduled to meet next week for their regularly scheduled meeting. The agenda released Thursday does not include any items directly pertaining to student safety.
