East Sac advances to Regional Final, SCC and CRB Fall Short on Monday

The Raiders advanced to Wednesday’s Regional Final by rallying from down two sets to win a thriller in front of a rowdy crowd that helped energize the Raiders.

East Sac struggled early against an aggressive Chargers serve and Chloe Largent who was able to find pockets to attack. The first set was tight early with several ties and lead changes but the Chargers took control after grabbing a 15-12 lead and pulled away to win by 10. The Raiders started well in set two and led 9-6 and 15-14 but they couldn’t extend it and the Chargers went on a 6-2 run to take a 20-17 lead. East Sac called time out and tied it at 21 but AC-GC scored 4 of the next 5 points to go up 2-0.

East Sac made some final adjustments and began to serve receive well allowing themselves to get into their offense and quickly took control of set 3 getting up 5-1. The Chargers weren’t going away and came back to tie the set at 7. After falling behind 9-7 East Sac took control and went up 12-9 and 15-10 on their way to their first win of the night.

Set four was tight early but a 5-0 run by East Sac put them ahead 15-10. They built the lead to 19-12 and were able to put the set away to send it to a fifth set. The Chargers started well in set five and led 4-3. East Sac stayed close and tied it at 6 and 8 before grabbing the lead for good. The Raiders went ahead 11-8 and forced the Chargers to take a time out. They extended the lead out of the break to 13-8 before completing the rally to win three sets to two.

The Raiders have dominated teams this season at the net but Monday it was their exceptional play in the back that propelled them to the victory. Bree Boeckman had a team high 46 digs while Makayla Meyer added 36 digs, Bailey Wollesen had 29, Maty Quirk 26 and Olivia Wernimont 21 digs. Wollesen had a team high 23 kills and was steady all match. Bree Boeckman came on strong the final three sets and finished with 15 kills. Olivia Wernimont added 9. Maty Quirk had a team high 30 assists and Makayla Meyer added 26.

East Sac improves to 23-0 on the season and will face South Hardin in the Regional Final on Wednesday at Fort Dodge Senior High with the match covered on KIKD 106.7 with prematch coverage around 6:40 and first serve at 7:00.

South Central Calhoun hung tough in all three sets until the middle part and then Emmetsburg would use a 5 or 6 point run to take a commanding lead and held on to win all three sets.

The first set had six ties and one lead change when Emmetsburg went up 7-6. They E-Hawks led 13-12 before extending it to 23-13. The Titans couldn’t recover though they did score three straight to cut it to 24-17. Set two was similar with 9 ties but no lead changes. The Titans again trailed 13-12 but the E-Hawks extended it to 18-12 and then went up 21-14. South Central Calhoun struggled at times against tips in the donut and in serve receive.

South Central Calhoun hung tough again in set three and trailed 14-13 before the E-Hawks went on another run to lead 21-13.

Riley Batta paced the Titans at the net with 7 kills and was 2nd on the team with 5 assists. Keira Hammen added 5 kills and Kortney Riley finished with 4 kills and 7 digs. Sally Musselman had 6 assists. Kylee Schleisman and Emma Geno each had 7 digs. Batta added a team high 2 aces.

The Titans season comes to an end at 16-23.

Coon Rapids Bayard ran into a team whose record coming into the match didn’t indicate how good they really were. The Saintes advanced to the Regional Final on Wednesday in Carroll as they topped the Crusaders in three sets. This was the 2nd straight year that Coon Rapids Bayard fell to St Albert in the post season.

The Crusaders had an outstanding season going 17-4, sharing the Rolling Valley Conference championship in the regular season and winning the conference tournament championship.

Coon Rapids Bayard fell behind in set one and trailed 10-3 but they came back to take a brief lead, The Saintes used that momentum to control sets two and three.

Alaya Betts led the Crusaders with 5 kills, Alexa Culbertson added 4 kills. Cassidy Baker had 15 assists. Chloe Parkis had a team high 17 digs and Brynn Bass added 11 digs and a team high 2 aces. Lacie Davis added 8 digs.
