Volleyball Playoff Results Tuesday, October 27th

Carroll At Sergeant Bluff Luton- Class 4A Region 1

Sergeant Bluff Luton 3

Carroll 0

25-20, 25-20, 25-16

Carroll battled extremely hard on Tuesday night and if a couple of bounces would have went their way they could be making a trip to State. Sergeant Bluff Luton was able to pull away late in each of the first two sets to go up 2-0. They led both sets 20-19 before edging away for the win. In each of those sets the Warriors had a couple of serves or attacks that hit the top of the net and dropped in for points. If those bounce the other way Carroll may have been the team putting the pressure on the Warriors in the 3rd set by being up 2-0.

Carroll knew they would need to relieve some of the pressure on their two outside hitters to keep the Warriors block from cheating that way. Instead of swinging against the middles from Sergeant Bluff Luton who had a definite size advantage the Tigers used Kennedy Lein on a slide and Gabi Hammer picked up most of her kills hitting out of right. That moved helped Ella Collison and Josie Ayala get better looks on the outside. The two came out firing in the 1st set which saw three ties and a pair of lead changes. Carroll had a 6-4 lead before falling down 7-6. Sergeant Bluff Luton led the rest of the way but their largest lead until the end of the set was 18-15 as Carroll pulled within one point seven times during the set but could never tie or grab the lead back after falling behind.

Carroll kept set two tight as well tying it twice but never getting a lead. Their largest deficit was five at 16-11 before they rallied again cutting it to 20-19. Again Sergeant Bluff Luton was able to get a few serves in, getting Carroll out of system and took the 2-0 lead.

The third set didn’t start well for Carroll as they may have been pressing themselves knowing they needed to get off to a good start. They fell down 4-0 when Coach Molly Lange called a timeout. Carroll came out of the break and quickly settled in cutting it to 4-2 but much like set two Carroll could never get a lead and trailed most of the third set by five to eight points.

Ella Collison led the Tigers with 12 kills while Josie Ayala finished with 11 and Gabi Hammer had 7 kills. Laura Sweeney finished the night with 29 assists while adding a team leading 10 digs. Hannah Jorgensen finished with 9 digs, Ayala added 7 and Collison and Kenzie Honold had 6.

Tigers finished the season at 23-11.
