Wall Lake City Council Considers Vicious Animal Ordinance Overhaul

The Wall Lake City Council is considering a replacement for an existing vicious animal ordinance that would remove outdated language from the city code. Clerk, Chris Rodman, says their current ordinance explicitly prohibits ownership of specific breeds.

Many of the larger communities in Iowa have already removed their bans on specific breeds like Pit Bull Terriers, German Shepherds or Rottweilers. Rodman says this ordinance review is not a matter of council preference, but rather, it is an issue of legality.

Rodman adds the council has not put together the proposed language for the replacement ordinance. However, they are actively reviewing what other communities have done and will select portions from the most successful ones to develop their own to best meet the needs of the community. Rodman says residents can expect the ordinance to be back for discussion during their November council meeting.

The ordinance’s final reading prior to its approval would likely be during the last council meeting of the calendar year on Dec. 28.
