The Carroll Tigers start the season win a hard fought win on the road. Carroll led most of the game but had to rally late. Carroll jumped out to a 7-0 lead with good ball movement against the Lynx 2-3 zone. Laura Sweeney was able to dribble drive and score or found Ella Collison or Camryn Schable who played well off the bench for a couple baseline jumpers. The Tigers controlled the 1st quarter and led 19-9 after the first eight minutes.
Webster City tightened up the zone in the 2nd quarter and the Tigers went cold missing several shots around the basket and weren’t looking to shoot from the outside. Carroll was up 21-12 midway through the 2nd quarter but Webster City closed the half with a 7-2 run and trialed 23-19.
Carroll responded out of the locker room but couldn’t pull away. They went up 32-23 on a three pointer from Gabi Hammer but the Lynx answered with 13-0 run to lead 36-32 early in the 4th. Things didn’t look good with a couple minutes remaining as Leah Kasch hit a couple runners and a pair 3’s to put the Lynx up 40-36. Laura Sweeney who ended up fouling out shortly after hit a huge 3 that cut the Tiger deficit to 40-39. Carroll regained the lead on a basket at the rim by Ella Collison. Alley Odland hit one of two free throws to make it 41 apiece. Tiger Head Coach Katie Kock called a timeout and set up a shot for the final play. Kennedy Lein inbounded the ball to Ella Collison in front of the Carroll bench. Collison attacked the baseline and hit a tough reverse layup t0 give Carroll the 43-41 win.
Carroll largest lead was 10 which they had twice and their largest deficit was 4 which happened twice. The game was tied twice and there were two lead changes.
Ella Collison paced the Tigers with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Laura Sweeney and Kennedy Lein each finished with 10 points and Camryn Schable had 6 points off the bench. Lein added 7 rebounds, Sweeney had 5 boards and Schable finished with 4 rebounds.
Carroll takes on Kuemper on Tuesday, December 1st.
