Carroll: 71
Winterset: 62
It wasn’t easy but the 2nd ranked Carroll Tigers improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Raccoon River Conference setting up a big matchup with 3rd ranked Ballard in Huxley on Friday. The Tigers fell down out of the gate but only 4-2, then answered with a 15-0 run to lead 17-4. The offense was moving the ball quick to find shots in the lane as Winterset was taking away the three in their zone defense. Carroll led 19-8 at the end of the 1st quarter and looked to be in control.
Some early turnovers in the 2nd quarter and Winterset got a couple shots to fall and gained some momentum. The Tigers saw their lead shrink to 24-20 late in the quarter but Tory Feldman who played with a ton of energy led a spark and helped Carroll have a 29-23 lead at half. It could have been 9 at the break but Levi Gurwell made a 3 from the left corner at the horn.
Carroll went back up 9 early in the 3rd but Winterset again made a run and by late in the quarter had trimmed the Tigers lead to 48-47. The Tigers got a bucket to end the 3rd and held a 50-47 lead going into the final 8:00. That late bucket gave Carroll some momentum and the Tigers went on a 14-0 run from the end of the 3rd into the 4th quarter, blowing the game open as they led 62-47. Nick Macke hit a huge 3 with Carroll up 6 to make it a nine point game. That shot seemed to take the energy out of the Huskies. Carroll maintained a double digit lead until the final 30 seconds as the Huskies scored 4 quick points.
Carroll had three players in double digits led by Tory Feldman who had 22 points to go with 16 rebounds. Kaleb Booth hit 10-11 free throws and finished with 21 points while Nick Macke added 10 points and had 2 of the Tigers 3-3’s.
