Authorities Say Fog and Slick Roadways Factored Into Fatal Accident Last Thursday

The official report on an accident that claimed the life of a Manning teen Thursday night says fog and slick road conditions likely factored into the cause. First responders were called to the scene just north of the intersection of 300th Street and Concord Avenue, northeast of Manning, at approximately 8:33 p.m. Fifteen-year-old Max James Sanford was northbound on Concord Avenue in a 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 when the truck left the roadway and entered the east ditch. The vehicle continued traveling northbound in the ditch, driving off the south bank of a creek and going airborne before striking the north side of the creek bank. The truck came to rest in the waterway on its top. Sanford was extricated by mechanical means and transported to Manning Regional Healthcare Center by Carroll County Emergency Medical Services with critical injuries.  He was transferred to a Des Moines hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
