Carroll Man Charged With Possession Of A Firearm By A Felon After Authorities Confirm Illinois Criminal History

A Carroll man who accidently shot himself in the leg in September now faces a felony charge after authorities determined he was barred from possessing a firearm in Iowa. The Carroll Police Department and Carroll County Emergency Services responded to a residence in the 200 block of East 10th Street on the evening of Sept. 10 in response to a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities say 50-year-old William O’Connor had been handling a .40 caliber handgun when it accidently discharged. An investigation later determined he had multiple felony convictions in the State of Illinois, which makes him ineligible to own a firearm in Iowa. He was issued a summons to appear in court on Dec. 31 for dominion/control of a firearm by a felon, a class D felony. If found guilty, O’Connor faces up to five years in prison and $7,500 in fines.
