The groundwork has been laid for the City of Lake View to begin negotiations with their employees over their Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 contracts and wages. Administrator, Scott Peterson, says there is a clearly defined process for these negotiations, starting with an opening proposal from the union representing the city’s police officers, electric workers and other employees.
Lake View’s employees are represented by AFSCME Council 61 out of Des Moines. The city had two weeks to offer a counter proposal, which was then presented at their council meeting on Monday night.
If the employees accept the city’s offer, the issue ends there. However, Peterson says they can choose to continue negotiations behind closed doors.
Peterson says they have not heard back from the employees’ representatives on if they wish to proceed with collective bargaining. Proposed municipal budgets are due to the Iowa Department of Management by March 31, and Peterson is optimistic they will be able to meet that deadline regardless of the path the union chooses to take.
