CCSD School Board To Review Achievement Gaps, Return To Learn And Staff Voluntary Retirement At Monday’s Meeting

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education will convene Monday evening for their regularly scheduled January meeting. The meeting will again be closed to the public due to COVID-19 mitigation protocols, but stakeholders will be able to attend remotely using Zoom Video Conferencing. Following approval of the consent agenda, the board will open a public hearing on the proposed 2021-22 school calendar. Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says their first major item of discussion will be a report from building principals on identified achievement gaps caused by coronavirus-related school disruptions.

Berlau adds student educational growth has been impacted by the pandemic, but initial data shows it may not be as worrying as they had originally predicted. Mid-year assessments were administered over the past week, and he expects the issue will return to the agenda as soon as data is available, likely in February. School officials will then review applications from teachers, administrators and other staff members who have applied for the district’s voluntary early retirement program. The board had previously stated they would consider up to six applications, and Berlau says they had already surpassed that as of Thursday.

The board can approve more than six applications if they feel it will improve the balance of the district’s General Fund. The last major area of discussion on Monday’s agenda is administrative reports. Berlau says these will include a review of their Return to Learn Plan and updates to the COVID-related leave policy.

They will close out the agenda with the first and second readings of more than 20 updated board policies, budget reports from Director of Business Affairs, Gary Bengtson, and bids for an additional vehicle and pressure washer. The Monday, Jan. 18 meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Adams Elementary School boardroom. The full agenda and details on how to attend remotely can be found included below.
