Carroll Man Charged With Felony Assault Scheduled For Trial In March

A Carroll man charged with felony domestic abuse filed a not guilty plea last week in Carroll County District Court. Thirty-eight-year-old Nickolas John Downs was arrested by the Carroll Police Department on Dec. 18 following an investigation into a Dec. 10 incident in the 500 block of E. 18th Street. According to law enforcement, Downs is accused of striking the victim upwards of 40 times, choking them and holding a knife to their neck. A police affidavit says the victim’s injuries were so severe they were not immediately recognizable. Downs filed his written not guilty plea to the class D felony charge on Thursday and waived his right to a speedy trial. Jury proceedings are scheduled to begin Tuesday, March 23 with a pretrial conference slated for March 11. If found guilty, Downs faces a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and $5,000 in fines.
