Carroll held on Tuesday after nearly giving up a 19 point lead in the final quarter. The Tigers dominated the first 24 minutes and led 60-43 heading into the final stanza. Kaleb Booth and Nick Macke were shooting the three really well combining for 8 in the game. The Tigers defense had held Jevin Sullivan to 17 points through 3 quarters. He scored more than that in the 4th quarter. Sullivan went off for 27 points in the 4th, finishing with 44 points. The Comets scored 33 points in the 4th after scoring 43 in the first three quarters. A Nick Macke assist to Treyton Goins for a layup stemmed the tide briefly for Carroll. The Tigers saw a 62-43 lead cut to 70-68 before the Goins layup. Carroll built the lead back to 76-68 before the Comets charged again. Nick Macke and Colby Christensen hit enough free throws down the stretch to seal the deal.

PHOTOS: Sponsored by Roselle Mutual Insurance   The bad thing for Carroll will be that everyone will remember the 4th quarter and the Comets rally. The Tigers were outstanding through 3 quarters and dominated every facet of the game through 3 quarters. They jumped out 6-0 and were up 19-7 at the end of the 1st quarter. Kaleb Booth had 16 points at half as the Tigers sliced their way through the Comets defense. They just couldn’t put them away. Carroll would get up by 17 and then it was cut to 12, then it was back to 17-18 and back to 12-13. Kaleb Booth finished with a team high 28 points, with 5-3’s and going 9-10 from the free throw line. Booth added 6 rebounds and 4 assists. Nick Macke added 15 points and Treyton Goins had 8 points and 6 rebounds. The Tigers improved to 11-0 overall and 10-0 in the Raccoon River Conference. The Cardinals would start off the contest with a 7-0 run before the Knights would be able to get their footing. Noah Bauer would break the long scoring drought by laying in two points. The first quarter would end with the Knights climbing back from that deficit and be down five points by a score of 14-9. The Knights would improve from an ugly first quarter and drain four threes, those coming from John Mayhall, Michael Pottebaum, and Dawson Gifford. Despite their efforts, the Cardinals would score 22 points in this quarter and take a 10 point lead at halftime, 36-26.   The Knights had a tough road ahead of them if they wanted to pull out a win, but the shots came up clutch in the second half. The Knights would start to chip away, getting within three points of the Cardinal lead at 45-42. Dawson Edwards and Michael Pottebaum swung the momentum back for the Knights. The then 10 point Cardinal lead would be cut down to five after the third quarter at 48-43. The fourth quarter would be filled with free throws for the Knights, which is how they ended up on top late in the fourth. The Knights tied the Cardinal lead three times before ultimately taking over the lead with 1:41 left to play in the game. Mayhall would take four trips to the free throw line and go seven of eight, firmly keeping the Knights ahead by two possessions. The Cardinals would match almost every three the Knights made in the fourth quarter, but it was the impressive shooting by Mayhall that made the difference. The Cardinals would sink a last second three pointer, but time would expire, giving the Knights a razor close 64-63 win.   Individually for the Knights, three players would end up with double digit scores, those including John Mayhall with 20 points, Noah Bauer with 10 points, and Michael Pottebaum with 15 points. Isaac Evans would prove to be essential underneath the basket as he grabbed 10 rebounds in this game. The Knights improve to 3-9 on the season as the Cardinals of Clarinda fall to 9-6.   The Knights are in action next when they travel to Creston on Friday, January 22nd.
