Staff from Carroll County Solid Waste Management is requesting help from local residents to make their efforts to keep potentially recyclable materials from entering the landfill. Since last March, an increasing number of people have shopped online due to the pandemic, and the boxes, plastic or envelopes those items arrive in on your doorstep in often ends up in the landfill or recycling center. Education Coordinator, Karen Monical, say some of that packaging, many of them from Amazon, is marked as recyclable but not in the traditional sense.
If not disposed of properly, these envelopes will instead take up space in the landfill. Monical says there is another common type of packaging that should be recyclable, but many mills are not currently accepting them.
She adds this may change at some point in the future, but for now, Amazon’s paper envelopes will have to go into your regular trash. For more information on what can and cannot be recycled, visit www.carrollcountylandfill.com or call them directly at 712-792-5001.
