Formal charges have been filed against a Carroll man accused of using stolen checks on two occasions in December. On Jan. 7, 26-year-old Corey Allen Mutum was issued a summons to appear by the Carroll Police Department on a fourth-degree theft charge, a serious misdemeanor. According to trial information filed Friday, he now also faces two counts of forgery, a class D felony. Authorities say Mutum took two personal checks from the victim on Dec. 19. Their investigation found he had written one check to himself for $100 and used the other one to purchase $272-worth of items from a local retailer. His arraignment hearing is slated for Thursday, Feb. 11. A class D felony in Iowa carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison and $7,500 in fines.
