Golfers Head To Black Hawk Lake This Weekend For 32nd Annual Arctic Open

The Black Hawk Men’s Club 32nd annual Arctic Open is scheduled for this weekend, and organizers are encouraging teams to register in advance for the unique winter golf event. Club Vice President, Matt Riedell, explains what the Arctic Open entails.

The 18-hole course on the ice has been sketched out, but club members will wait until Friday, Feb. 5 to finish preparing the lake. Generally, between 60 and 180 people brave the wintry weather each year for the Arctic Open. The biggest variable organizers have to account for is ice thickness, and Riedell says conditions are nearly perfect for Saturday.

Early registration is open now for $25 per person. Teams can log on to the Black Hawk Men’s Club Facebook page or contact Jimmy Stock using the information included below this story. In-person registration is also available the day of the event in Town Bay from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Participants will head out onto the lake for a shotgun start at 12:30 p.m. Riedell says all money raised from registration fees and clothing sales is used to benefit local causes.

In previous years, the Arctic Open would conclude with a chili feed. However, due to the pandemic, organizers have decided to forego this part of the event. The weather forecast for Saturday, Feb. 6 calls for high temperatures in the single digits. Riedell encourages teams to monitor the Black Hawk Men’s Club Facebook page for any announcements regarding the Arctic Open.
