Carroll Police Chief, Brad Burke, has put together the year-end statistics for last year and says there was a notable increase in one category, from 36 operating while intoxicated (OWI) cases in 2019 to 60 in 2020. He says this is likely based on a couple of factors, with the first falling on the driver.
The second is from the police department itself.
Burke says that even though the numbers in OWIs and public intoxications, from 27 in 2019 to 33 in 2020, were elevated, other areas dropped. He points to one very likely reason for that.
Burke says there was no major change in domestic abuse charges and the same holds true as burglary, criminal mischief and mental health call numbers remained relatively stable. Assaults and theft reports actually declined. Assaults went from 78 in 2019 to 42 in 2020 and thefts from 228 to 185. There was one area were Burke predicted numbers would be much lower this year, but the statistics don’t bear out that prediction.
Many times, comments on news stories and social media have individuals saying crime rates in Carroll are on the rise. Burke says these numbers really don’t substantiate those claims.
