The Kuemper Knights were moments away from winning a close game against the OA-BCIG Falcons, but they would end up losing Monday night. In the first half of this contest, both teams would go back and forth with the lead. The Knights would have a 17-15 lead after the first quarter, with the Falcons leading by one at 32-31 heading into halftime. 

 

The third quarter was a repeat of the first two quarters, both teams fighting hard to gain back the lead. This time around, OA-BCIG held on to a two point 44-42 lead heading into the final quarter of play. Knights Head Coach Tyler Tryon says in this game, the lead changed a total of nine times. The fourth quarter is where the game swerved in favor of the Falcons. The Knights were up by one point with three minutes left to play when the Falcons were able to tie up the game with one minute left. Coach Tryon says The Knights struggled to get the stops they needed to swing the lead back in their favor. The Falcons were able to hit crucial free throws to get ahead and pull away with the 63-57 win.

 

The Knights as a team would end up draining 11 threes in this contest. Individually, Akuet Malek was one block shy of nabbing a double-double posting nine blocks and 11 rebounds along with eight points. Catherine Mayhall would end her night with an impressive performance on both ends of the court posting 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists, and three steals. The Kuemper Knights fall to 5-15 on the season as the Falcons improve to 11-9.

 

The Knights will be on the road next when they face off against Des Moines Christian on Tuesday, February 9th.

West Harrison at Glidden Ralston

The Glidden Ralston Wildcats were able to easily defeat the West Harrison Hawkeyes and pick up a quality Rolling Valley Conference win Monday night. The Wildcats would start off their large scoring night with a big defensive effort going 26-4 in the first quarter. The big offensive night continued in the second quarter where the Wildcats scored another 18 points and would hold the 44-14 halftime lead. Wildcats Head Coach Cole Corson says his team was able to limit pointless fouls while keeping Haley Koch, averaging 13.3 points per game for the Hawkeyes, pressured without causing fouls on their end. 

 

The Wildcats continued their consistent scoring and tough defense in the second half by going 14-5 in the third quarter and 14-2 in the fourth quarter. After all was said and done, the Wildcats would walk away with the 72-21 victory. 

 

For the Wildcats three players would end their night with double digit scores, those being Gretchen Wallace. 17 points, Paige Klocke, 17 points, and Morgen Koehler, 15 points. Wallace was also able to set a new school record with 59 blocks in a single season. She also surpassed the 1,000 career points and 500 career rebounds mark this season as well.  The Wildcats improve to 10-8 as the Hawkeyes fall to 0-19.

 

The Wildcats are in action next when they welcome the Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders to Glidden for the first round of regional play on Thursday, February 11th. Jeff Blankman will be broadcasting that contest over on 1380 AM, 95.1 FM KCIM beginning around 7 pm.

MVAO-COU at IKM-Manning

The IKM-Manning Wolves were able to send off their senior players with a great win against the MVAO-COU Rams on senior night Monday night. The Wolves would begin their big scoring night with a strong defensive look keeping the Rams to eight points while their offense would score 28 points. The Wolves pushed along in the second quarter with a 16 point quarter and kept the Rams again below double digits. The Wolves would secure a 44-17 halftime lead with an impressive first half performance.

The Wolves high scoring offense would continue into the second half with a 21 point third quarter. The Rams would struggle to score in this half as the Wolves defense would keep them to 13 total second half points. While the Wolves would score a game low six points in the final frame of play, their huge scoring night was more than enough to secure them the 71-30 win.

 

Individually for the Wolves, Nicole Hanson and Alexa Ahrenholtz would be on fire from the field scoring 20 and 18 points respectively. Bianca Cadwell would also be a force for the Wolves posting 11 points, two assists, six rebounds, one block, and one steal. The Wolves improve to 7-10 on the season as the MVAO-COU Rams fall to 7-13. 

 

The Wolves will finish out the regular season with a game against the Underwood Eagles on Tuesday, February 9th.

         Woodbine scored the first bucket of the game with Whitney Kuhlmann putting the Tigers up 2-0. That would be their only lead as the Crusaders scored the next 9 points. The Crusaders defense was aggressive picking up 6 steals and forcing nearly ten- three second in the lane violations in the 1st half. Coon Rapids Bayard was also whistled for 15 first half fouls which impacted them late in the game but by then they had the game wrapped up. A 9-0 run helped them jump ahead 11-3 at the end of the 1st quarter and 21-8 at the half. Alaya Betts and Brynn Bass helped that 1st half run with 8 points and 9 points respectively. Betts and Breeley Clayburg were tough on the glass and Bass was part of the defensive pressure up front and finished the game with 5 steals. Coon Rapids Bayard extended the lea in the 3rd and were up by 19 twice in the 2nd half before Woodbine tried to make a run. The Tigers trimmed the deficit to 10 midway through the 4th quarter with Betts and Miranda Garcia fouling out. Coon Rapids Bayard didn’t shoot a free throw in the 1st half but went 5-7 in the 2nd half and hit them down the stretch to extend the lead. Coon Rapids Bayard allowed 5 or less points in each of the first 3 quarters.

         Brynn Bass led the way in the win with 16 points and 5 steals while Alaya Betts added 10 points and 6 rebounds. Breeley Clayburg had 5 early rebounds and finished with 9 boards while Mia Leighty added 7 rebounds and Miranda Garcia and Jessica Evans each had 6 rebounds.

         The win improves the Crusaders to 7-9 overall and 5-9 in the Rolling Valley. Coon Rapids Bayard heads to Glidden Ralston for 1st round Regional action on Thursday on KCIM.

The battle of two of the top three teams in the Rolling Valley conference ended with the CAM-Anita Cougars pulling out the victory against the Paton Churdan Rockets. From start to end the Cougars were able to keep up with the Rockets and ended each quarter with the lead. The Cougars would start with a close 13-7 lead after the first quarter, but would soon extend that lead to 27-16 at halftime.

 

In the third quarter, the lead would stay at 11 points for the Cougars as both teams would score 15 points. While the Rockets would out score the Cougars 13-10 in the fourth quarter, their first half performance would be the decision maker late in this contest. The Cougars win a close contest by a score of 52-44. 

 

Individually for the Rockets, Danielle Hoyle continues her impressive senior campaign with a 21 point showing. Also for the Rockets, Hannah Behrens finished with nine points, Tessa Steimel had eight points, and Chloe Berns finished with 6 points. The Rockets fall to 14-5 on the season as the CAM-Anita Cougars improve to 15-6.

 

The Rockets are in action next when they face off against the Ar-We-Va Rockets in the first round of regional play on Thursday, February 11th. Nick Brincks will be in Paton Churdan to cover that game over on KICK 106.7 beginning around 7 pm Thursday night.

The South Central Calhoun Titans lost a close contest against conference rival Pocahontas Area on Monday night. The Titans would start off leading in this contest by a score of 21-12 after the first quarter. The Indians started to chip away at the nine point Titan lead and would eventually take over the game before halftime. From down nine to up four, the Indians would take a 34-30 lead with them into halftime. Titans Head Coach Brady Dicks says the biggest problem that his team faced in the second quarter was allowing the Indians to take and make easy shots.

 

The four point Indian lead would be made into a five point lead after the third quarter as the Indians took a 48-43 lead into the fourth quarter. Coach Dicks also added that his team started to settle for tough jumpers in the second half which led to the Indians pulling away late in the contest. The Indians would be able to keep their five point lead until then end. The Indians won this contest by a score of 59-53. 

 

Individually for the Titans, Riley Batta had an impressive scoring night with 20 points along with eight rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Sally Musselman would be the other Titan who cracked a double digit night with 11 points along with two rebounds, 1 steal, and 1 block. The Titans fall to 13-7 as the Pocahontas Area Indians improve to 11-8. 

 

The Titans will wrap up the regular season on Tuesday, February 9th when they face off against the East Sac Raiders. Jeff Blankman will be broadcasting this regular season finale on KICK 106.7 beginning around 5:50 Tuesday night.
