Atlantic Man Is Biggest Male Loser In Iowa TOPS Program

Just six weeks into the new year, many resolutions have fallen by the wayside. For those still hanging tough, the number one resolution—of losing weight—gets challenged this weekend with the sweet temptations of Valentine’s Day. However, an Atlantic man who has spent years working toward a goal of losing 50 pounds, recently celebrated its attainment. Eighty-two-year-old Edmund Angell  says he struggled for the last 40 years or so with weight gain and admits he maxed out around 310 pounds. He credits long-term membership in a local chapter of a non-profit organization, TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) for support in his success.

Angell laughs as describes how long it took to get serious about losing weight.

Angell hit his goal in 2019 and was named the 2020 TOPS Iowa King for having lost more weight than any other male member in the state. Although there is no prize, Angell says it can show other men that the program works. The key to success, he adds, is no big secret.

He admits he was in the group of one in three American adults classified as obese and has suffered from associated adverse health conditions.

Angell believes weight problems often begin in childhood, when dietary habits are formed. It takes a lifestyle change and not a “diet,” he says to achieve and maintain weight loss, so he plans to continue incorporating what he learned in the program, eating smaller portions exercising and journaling as much as possible. As he looks ahead to another 50-pound goal, Angell’s advice to others is to stick with it. He adds that belonging to a group is a great reminder of what you should and should not be doing.
