CCSD School Board Will Consider Extending School Year By At Least Three Days At March Meeting

As of Feb. 15, students in the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) have missed four days of instruction due to inclement weather, and school officials are considering if and how they will make up that time. According to Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, the calendar the district is using has more than enough hours built into it that they would not be required by law to extend the school year. Currently, the final day of school is scheduled for Tuesday, May 25, but Berlau says it may be beneficial for students, teachers and administrators if they were to finish with a full week of class.

Berlau says the issue often lies with teacher contract days. Unlike students, whose instructional time is measured in hours, teachers are contractually obligated for a specific number of days. He says it is often difficult for staff to make the most of those days if students are already gone for summer break.

His proposal would have teachers returning for just two days without students after the holiday, June 1 and 2. Berlau adds there is still plenty of winter left, and additional snow days are a very real possibility. To address this, they are developing a plan to avoid educational disruptions by utilizing remote learning.

School officials did not take any formal action on calendar adjustments at Monday’s meeting. Berlau will bring a formal recommendation to the board during the March 15 meeting for approval.
