Six of the 11 area wrestlers advance through day 1 of the State Wrestling Tournament. Blake McAlister of South Central Calhoun won his opening round match at 170 in Class 1A by fall in dominating fashion winning in 1:29. He will wrestle against Aiden Udell of Iowa City Regis in the quarterfinals. McAlister is ranked 3rd and Udell 4th. Jayden Soard of South Central Calhoun in Class 1A at 220 dropped his opening round match at 220 but came back with an aggressive and impressive win by fall in 1:59 vs Brant Tedrow of Van Buren. Soard moves into Friday 2nd round consolations against the loser of Cole Clark of Lisbon and Sage Hulschizer of St Ansgar. Jaxson Kuhlmann of Carroll lost his opening round match in Class 3A 126 by a score of 7-4 to Cale Cox of Ankeny but bounced back nicely with a win by fall in 1:37 over Cale Straley of North Scott. Kuhlmann will wrestle in the 2nd round consolations on Friday against the loser of the quarterfinal round match between Carter Fecht of Waverly Shell Rock and Grant O’Dell of Iowa City West. Carter Drake of Carroll had the win of the day rallying from down 6-4 to tie the score at 6 in the final second of the match. He quickly got the take down in overtime to win 8-6. Drake will wrestle in the quarterfinals on Friday Vs Dylan Whitt of Cedar Falls at Class 3A 138. Carroll’s Abraham Dirkx had a steady 5-1 win in his opening round match in Class 3A 152 over Caden McDermott of Pleasant Valley and moves into the quarterfinals on Friday Vs Carson Martinson of SE Polk. Shae Parkis wrapped up the night with a come from behind 3-2 win over Kain Luensman of Monticello. Parkis was down 1-0 before tying the match and getting a take down with around 20 seconds remaining. He allowed an escape but held off a take down move. Parkis is in Friday 2nd round consolations and will wrestle the loser of the quarterfinal match between Michael Macias of Assumption and Brady Ortner of Vinton Shellsburg.
Kevin King of South Central Calhoun lost both of his matches in Class 1A 145 pounds and finished his junior season 46-10. Garrett Quirk of East Sac went 0-2 in Class 1A 160 p0unds, finishing his senior campaign at 33-18. Cooper Nielsen of Audubon wrestled well but went 0-2 and finished his sophomore year at 34-18 after making State in Class 1A 195. Justin Rupnow of East Sac finished his senior season 30-12 after going 0-2 in Class 1A 285. Cale Nelson of Carroll dropped both of his matches in Class 3A at 106 pounds and ended his freshman season at 25-14.
