Glidden City Council Considers Annual Sewer Rate Increases To Help Pay For Wastewater Project

The Glidden City Council is considering incrementally increasing sewer rates over the next three years to help finance the community’s new wastewater project. City officials voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance change’s first reading at their meeting Monday night. Administrator, Brooke Peterson, explains how bills will be affected by the change if approved.

Originally, the council was looking at implementing these annual rate increases over the course of six years. However, Peterson says they did not want to lock price hikes for that long if it were not absolutely necessary. The current proposal will slightly increase usage fees each July through Fiscal Year (FY) 2024 with a reevaluation scheduled before FY25.

She adds the changes are relatively small and most customers will hardly notice a difference in their bills. As it stands, the council is only considering sewer rates, but Peterson says it is possible they will adjust water rates in the future.

Any changes to city ordinances require three readings to pass. The second reading is slated for March 8 with the final reading on March 22. Residents with comments or questions are encouraged to attend these meetings, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Glidden City Hall conference room.
