South Central Calhoun boys will head to the State Boys Basketball Tournament for the first time in school history after pulling away in the 4th quarter to beat Iowa Falls Alden. The Titans seniors qualified for state in football and made it their mission to get to Wells Fargo Arena. That mission came true with a 24-16 4th quarter that started with Brennan Holder hitting a 3, putting them ahead 43-40. The Cadets pulled within 1 at 43-42 but the Titans stretched the lead 50-42. Cole Corey and T’Juan Hildreth knocked down free throws down the stretch as the Titans were able to run clock and spread the floor.

South Central Calhoun had to rally in the 1st half after struggling from the outside early. Joshua Dietrich dominated at the rim to keep the Titans in the game with 8 points and 7 rebounds in the 1st quarter. They trailed 17-10 heading into the 2nd quarter. Homer Martz and Eli Wheelock came off the bench and helped ignite a run as South Central Calhoun went on a 12-0 run to go ahead 27-22. During the run Eli Wheelock and Joshua Dietrich contributed 10 of the 12 points. Wheelock hit a 2 followed by a Dietrich 3, Wheelock 3 and then a Dietrich 2. The Titans led 32-27 at half.
Karson Sharar of Iowa Falls Alden was terrific all night and led all scorers with 31 points and came out in the 3rd and rallied the Cadets to a 36-35 lead that was extended to 38-35. Cole Corey responded with a 3 to tie it at 38, before putting the Titans ahead again 40-38. Iowa Falls Alden tied the game at 40 heading into the 4th quarter.
Joshua Dietrich had a nice double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds. Eli Wheelock had 11 first half points and finished with 14 points. Cole Corey added 10 points with 8 of those in the 2nd half and Brennan Holder had 9 points all in the 2nd half. T’Juan Sanders finished with 5 assists.
The win improves them to 19-5 on the season. They will open the Boys State Basketball Tournament as the 8th seed and will play the #1 seed Boyden Hull on Monday night at 6:00. The game will be broadcast on KIKD 106.7.
