Only minimal damage was reported after a controlled burn on the western edge of Carroll spread to a nearby pile of railroad ties Friday morning. The Carroll Fire Department was dispatched to Moorhouse Ready Mix near the intersection of W. 6th Street and Burgess Avenue at approximately 10 a.m. According to Fire Chief, Greg Schreck, the fire spread from the grass field east of the property and into the piled wood. Crews were able to prevent the blaze from reaching the industrial buildings and used heavy equipment to bury the northern and southern ends of the discarded ties to contain the fire. Schreck says stopping the railroad ties from burning would be very difficult and they were forced to stay on scene to monitor the situation and watch for flareups.
