Annual Household Hazardous Materials Disposal Day Back For 2021

Mark your calendars now for the annual Household Hazardous Materials Disposal Day, hosted by Carroll County Solid Waste (CCSW) and Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC). The Saturday, April 10 event will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the DMACC Carroll campus parking lot on north Grant Road. No appointments are necessary and there is no fee collected for the disposal of products we use every day in our homes, yards and garages that are considered hazardous. New formulations and technologies create energy efficiency, longer life and more effect cleaning for many products, but these cannot be just thrown in the garbage bin as we have done in the past. For example, all batteries and light bulbs with the exception of alkaline batteries and incandescent bulbs are categorized as hazardous. “Daily items that could previously be trashed are now labeled toxic, corrosive, flammable or keep out of reach of children,” says CCSW Director, Mary Wittry. “With these new technologies, it is best practice to check ALL product labels for the hazardous symbol, warnings and proper disposal.” County residents are encouraged to check out the listing of hazardous materials at carrollcountysolidwaste.com. Those bringing items in on April 10 for disposal are asked to keep materials in their original containers and to package needles and sharps in a certified sharps container or rigid laundry jug firmly taped shut and labeled. Items such as oil filters, ammunition, explosives, asbestos and radioactive materials will not be accepted. Details for proper disposal of those items is available by calling 792-5001 and will be shared at the event. Household hazardous waste materials are also accepted daily from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Recycling Center. There is no fee and no appointment is necessary.
