What You Can And Cannot Bring To Saturday’s Carroll County Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day

Director of Carroll County Solid Waste (CCSW), Mary Wittry, is reminding residents of the upcoming Household Hazardous Material Disposal Day. This will be held Saturday, April 10 at the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Carroll campus from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Wittry says they do take sharps and needles, but only under specific conditions.

More than 3,000 people have participated in this annual event since 2000, but many are still unaware that a multitude of common household items are considered hazardous materials.

CCSW holds an electronic waste disposal event at a different time of the year for recycling of those products. They also take them every day of the week, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. TVs, monitors and laptops are disposed at a charge of $20 each. Wittry stresses there are many items that will NOT be accepted on Saturday.

The one thing that many people bring that then needs to go back home with them is latex paint. That can be disposed of in the regular trash once dried up. Other things that will be accepted include cleaners, paint removers, oil-based paint and stains, spray paints, antifreeze, motor oil, old pesticides and compact fluorescent bulbs. No appointments are necessary. Attendees will pull in to the event off of Grant Road. They will remain in their car and fill out a short survey. Organizers will unload the vehicle and tell you when it is safe to pull away. Once completed, Metro Waste Authority will take control of the sorting and proper disposal. Questions can be directed to CCSW at 792-5001 or you can log on to www.westcentralsolidwaste.com for more information.
