The new Director at The Recovery Center at Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC) has a long background in healthcare, having started as a discharge planner and floor LPN at MRHC 11 years ago, after previously having worked in long-term care at The Plaza. The desire to learn and do more for regional patients led Taya Vonnahme back to school, and she received her RN degree in 2017—but she still wanted to do more. She hit the books again, studying for her Nurse Practitioner degree, which led her into a discussion with CEO, Linn Block, and Chief Nursing Officer, Michelle Anderson, about bringing something different to The Recovery Center.
Vonnahme became the director in December and will be able to take over officially as a Nurse Practitioner after certification, in about a month or so. She says the center generally has a waiting list for in-house treatment, but the impact of the pandemic became more evident after returning to full capacity in January.
Vonnahme stresses that every treatment center is different, but their highest scores in feedback come from their individualized plans of care.
Vonnahme says they are continually planning. They have already doubled outpatient opportunities to two nights per week and they incorporate physical and community interaction activities into the plans to treat the whole person. She adds they are aiming to add even more services.
They are also researching the addition of a senior outpatient program.
Vonnahme says her long-range vision includes the hopes of an expansion to be able to meet the needs of even more patients as well as the introduction of specific medications for opioid addiction. They are looking into drugs like Suboxone, which helps ease some of the withdrawal symptoms. She says approval for use is a month or so away. Vonnahme adds her team is newly developed, but every single person is key to the success of the programs and the patients. The individualized treatment can only be made possible with the combined efforts of their clinical coordinator who has a wealth of medical experience, their secretary who is the glue that keeps them all together and their four counselors with backgrounds in social work, nursing and recovery themselves.
