Artists from central Iowa and Minnesota have been commissioned for a special mural project at the Sac County Conservation Center at Hagge Parke. Naturalist, Kristen Bieret, says the educational mural will feature and highlight native plants and animals from the North Raccoon River Valley on three walls and will be the foundation for the future addition of three-dimensional, hands-on exhibits. The mural is being made possible through a $5,000 grant from the Sac Community Foundation. “We are so thankful for the contributions of the Sac Community Foundation to help make this dream a reality,” Bieret says. “If not for community partners like this, our project would not be possible. We are truly excited to bring this educational opportunity to the community of Sac City.” Those interested in contributing to the project can get more information through the contact points included below. Naomi Friend is a professional Iowa artist who will be working on the mural. She explores the prairies of the Midwest through art-making and her works reside in public and private art collections. They are inspired by the ecosystems, plants and animals that make up the texture of our landscape. She is currently working to repair a mural at Story County Conservation with illustrator, Dean Biechler, and she sells vinyl stickers for many of the State Parks and public lands in Iowa. Anna Segner is a Minnesota native with a focus of painting, mixed media and assemblage in her studio art. She incorporates critical animal studies and other research to question the human act of “toying” with animals and nature. She currently teaches drawing at Iowa State University (ISU).
