The Glidden City Council approved a resolution during their meeting last (Monday) night to implement a citywide Urban Revitalization Plan. Officials held a public hearing on the issue and heard from only one resident, who simply wanted clarification a few details of the proposal. Administrator, Brooke Peterson, explains what Urban Revitalization means for the community’s businesses and residents.

However, Peterson notes there are some exceptions listed in the Urban Revitalization Plan.

City officials are optimistic the substantial abatements will encourage property owner to pursue improvements to their homes or businesses. Through the program, the council is choosing to forego some property tax revenue in the short term to incentivize growth and expand the community’s tax base. Peterson says the current economic conditions make the incentives even more attractive.

The council unanimously approved the plan Monday night, but Peterson says they will not be able to begin offering the abatements until sometime in mid-June at the earliest. The plan needs to be adopted as an ordinance, which takes a minimum of three readings. She expects the third and final reading to be approved or waived as quickly as possible.
