Audubon and Kuemper At Districts At Kuemper
Luke Hicks and Carter Soppe of Kuemper punched their ticket to the State Tennis tournament and nearly pulled out with district championship. The doubles pair advanced to the championship match against Harrison Dahm and Colin Reis of Denison Schleswig. They fell down early in set 1 and trailed 4-1 before rallying to make it 4-3. The Monarchs bounced back and won the last two to win the set 6-3. Kuemper started quickly in set 2 and had a 4-3 lead before Denison Schleswig rallied to win the last 3 games and won 6-4 to win the match. Sam Janssen and Blake Pottebaum of Kuemper won their first round and quarterfinal matches 6-0, 6-0. They squared off with Dahm and Reis of Denison Schleswig in the semifinals. They lost in the semifinals 6-3 and 6-4 before playing Wyatt Johnson and Isaac Leinen of Denison Schleswig. The Knights dominated the 3rd place match 6-1, 6-2 to finish 3rd.
Audubon played all four players in doubles matches. Tyler Rugaard and Eli Deist played well and hustled in their opening round match 6-0, 6-0 to Sam Janssen and Blake Pottebaum. Connor Christensen and Jake Lauritsen of Audubon also fell in the opening round to Stephen Lienen and Nick Anderson of Harlan 6-2, 6-0.
Gus Collison of Kuemper picked up a win in singles in the opening round wining 6-1, 6-1 over Casten Wacholtz of St Edmond. Collison matched up with Brock Bruns of Harlan who was the 2nd seed in the Quarterfinals and lost 6-3, 6-0. Will Pugh of Kuemper was the only other local player in singles and he fell 6-3, 6-4 to Mitchell Rueschenberg of Harlan in the opening round.
The Knights will host St Albert on Saturday.
