Three nurses from Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) in Lake City and the McCrary Rost Clinic have been selected as recipients of the 2021 DAISY Award. Registered nurses, Ashley Hildreth and Gina Davis, and certified registered nurse anesthetist, Jeremy Johnson, were presented their awards at a special banquet, celebrating the compassionate patient care and clinical skills that are the benchmarks for selection of DAISY Award recipients. DAISY stands for Diseases Attacking the Immune System and was founded by the family of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 from complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP). The award is designed to honor the dedication and compassion of nurses like the ones who cared for Barnes and his family. Hildreth works in the emergency department (ED) and on the inpatient floor and joined the SMCH team in 2018. She was nominated by an ED patient who says her compassion and expertise put them at ease from the start. Davis, who has worked in the surgical department since 2014, was also nominated by a patient who says she could see the compassion and empathy in her eyes and in all the little ways she was able to provide comfort in an uncomfortable situation. Johnson has served the surgical department since 2016, and not only uses humor to put his patients at ease in very “heavy” situations, but also takes the time to follow up with patients and family members, demonstrating a depth of care and concern for them all while taking ownership of their care.
