Born on October 19, 1942 in Morrison, Illinois, she was the daughter of John and Lucille (Olson) Holland. Sissy grew up in Morrison, Illinois and attended Morrison High School.  She moved to Madison, Wisconsin for a short time until returning to Morrison to help her mother in their cafe.

Sissy married Harry Van Zuiden on December 27, 1963 at the Ebenezer Reformed Church in Morrison, Illinois. In 1972, Harry and Sissy moved to Carroll, IA when General Electric opened a plant.

Sissy worked at a number of places in Carroll, JCPenney, Dr’s. Winjum & Winjum and Farm Credit Services of America.  During her retirement she worked part-time at Enchanted Gardens and for Tom Schmitz in his store, Arrangements. After her husband, Harry, passed in 2015, she took over the position of checking the quality of the cappuccino almost every morning at Drees Oil.

She was known for her spunky personality, her ability to make everyone smile, and was always ready to lend a hand to her family and friends. She absolutely took it upon herself to go-above-and-beyond for her granddaughters with vacations to Disney World, Hawaii, and so many other incredible places. She was also known to bring just a few peanut butter sandwiches to school when lunch was bad or drop off a coffee to her daughter-in-law at work. She was the “cool” grandma to all of her granddaughters friends and always tried to stay up-to-date with technology so she could be connected to her many family and friends.

In lieu of cards and flowers, Sissy would love to be remembered as a humble, kind, and giving “grandmother” to all. With that being said we would love for you to pay it forward. Not in the line at a coffee shop, or a drive thru, but maybe a child that needs new shoes, a hat, coat, mittens, please help out. A tank of gas or groceries for someone or a family in need. A family that suffers the loss of a loved one and needs money to cover funeral expenses, please pay it forward. Sissy’s heart loved so much that it wore itself out. Let’s keep that heart full of love beating by paying it forward, and when you do… just smile and remember Sissy. All memorials will be used to pay it forward.

Sissy is survived by a son Bill and his wife Tara of Carroll; three granddaughters; Kirsten Phillips (Andrew) great grandchildren Faith, Emerie, Charlee and Paxton of Lake View, Meredith (special friend Patrick Gerhardt) of Gowrie, and Elizabeth Van Zuiden of Carroll; a sister-in-law Carol Kuebler and her husband Dave of West Lafayette Indiana; a sister-in-law Leta Van Zuiden of Morrison, Illinois and several nieces and nephews including Keith and Kristopher Holland who lived with Harry and Sissy for several years while their father served in the Air Force. Sissy considered them as one of her own children.

Sissy was preceded in death by her husband Harry; her parents; John and Lucille (Olson) Holland; father and mother in law William and Anna Van Zuiden; her brother Jim Holland; his wife Barbera and a niece Karla; and a brother-in-law Merwyn Van Zuiden.
