Storm Lake Man Arrested On Weapon Charge And Public Intox Following Inadvertent Gun Discharge

The Storm Lake Police Department reports a Holstein man was taken into custody over Memorial Day Weekend on weapon charges. According to law enforcement, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of W. 9th Street at approximately 1 a.m. in response to a suspected gunshot. Upon arrival, officers made contact with an individual in the parking lot nearby where the shot was reported. The subject, identified as 36-year-old Kenneth Antonio Curtis, appeared to show signs of intoxication and was found to be in possession of a 9mm handgun. Following their investigation, law enforcement alleges Curtis had accidently discharged the handgun. Police say the errant round did not result in any injuries or property damage. He was transported to the Buena Vista County jail and charged with carrying weapons while intoxicated, a serious misdemeanor, and public intoxication, a simple misdemeanor. Authorities note Curtis did possess a valid permit to carry, but Iowa law prohibits individuals from carrying firearms when under the influence.
