School districts in the region are beginning to rollout out their summer meal programs. These programs are funded through the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and provide free, nutritious meals to children 18 years of age or younger at no cost to students during the break. Districts’ participation in the effort is voluntary, but nearly all schools in the area are providing meals in some manner. Dates, times and locations vary by district and community, and some schools are requesting parents and guardians register their kids in advance to provide an accurate meal count.
