Carroll County Ambulance Director, Darrell Baker, passed away last Thursday and the Board of Supervisors was, unfortunately, tasked with discussing an interim replacement at their Monday meeting. Chair, Gene Meiners, says this would give them time to review the job description and create a posting for the position while still following through on the guidance Baker offered them before his death.

Meiners says he spoke with Wendy Baker, who is a critical care paramedic, about the possibility of an appointment and she was willing to accept the interim role in addition to paramedic duties. Carroll County Auditor, Kourtney Irlbeck, told the supervisors she believes they should consider an hourly rate for the additional supervisory work. Supervisors discussed the fact that it could take months to get a replacement hired and in place. Dean Schettler asked about how much involvement this board will have in that process. Rich Ruggles explains in the past, two representatives from the Board of Supervisors worked with the Ambulance Board to whittle the applicants down. The finalists are then interviewed by the boards with supervisors able to make the final selection. Irlbeck outlines the current salaries for Ambulance Service employees.

The supervisors approved a motion to compensate at halfway between the two hourly pay rates for the time split between paramedic and supervisory roles. They also expressed their condolences to Darrell Baker’s family and friends, saying he will be very missed. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. tomorrow (Wednesday) at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll. A link to Baker’s obituary can be found below.
