Iowa DNR Reports Sewer-Like Odor On Clear Like Is Coming From Rotting Vegetation And Algae Blooms

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is reporting that complaints of a sewer-like odor around Clear Lake is not related to a sewer leak. During the investigation, staff from the DNR and the Clear Lake Sanitary Sewer District checked flow data and other records and inspected both wastewater lift stations located on the north shore. They found everything in proper working order with no reports of leaks or sewer-like odors. The DNR later found a significant amount of decaying aquatic vegetation, primarily Curly Leaf Pondweed, along the north shore. They also reported a Blue Green Algae bloom, which is potentially causing some of the sewer-like odors. Routine water sampling has verified that there is not a sewer leak, but authorities will continue to work together in monitoring the situation.
