Creston at Kuemper
Kuemper started off week 4 of baseball action with two wins against Creston on Monday. In game one, it was Creston who grabbed an early 1-0 lead following the top of the first inning. Kuemper had a chance to tie the game up in the bottom of the second with runners on first and third but Creston held on to keep a 1-0 lead. Creston added two more runs in the top of the third off wild pitches from Kuemper, leading 3-0. Kuemper started to respond with two runs by Logan Sibenaller and Ausin Tigges as Tigges grabbed a triple to cut down the Creston lead to 3-2.
Creston shot back with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth, going up 5-2. Kuemper started to climb back with a run in the bottom of the fourth, a Cal Wanniger hit to score a runner in the fifth, and another in the bottom of the sixth. Creston’s final run of the game was in the top of the sixth where they took a 6-5 lead following Kuempers run in the bottom of the inning. Creston had bases loaded in the top of the seventh, but Kuemper stopped them in their tracks and didn’t allow a run to be scored. With bases loaded and two outs, Kuemper’s Max Irlmeier was hit by pitch to tie the game at 6-6, then Sibenaller grabbed a walk off RBI single to shallow right to give the Knights the 7-6 victory.
Game two was not as high scoring as the first game was. Creston and Kuemper were scoreless through two full innings, and it wasn’t until the bottom of the third where we saw the first and only score of the game. John Mayhall got on base thanks to a hit by pitch, and later scored for Kuemper when Blake Pottebaum got a sac fly RBI. Mayhall was almost called out at home, but thanks to the catcher not cleanly catching the ball, Mayhall gave Kuemper the 1-0 lead. Cater Putney in game two performed well on the hill, going six innings and allowing one hit, one walk, one hit batter, and three strikeouts. While the hits were not going Keumper’s way, they walked away in game two with the 1-0 win.
Kuemper improves to 8-3 on the season, 6-2 in Hawkeye 10 conference play as Creston falls to 4-11 overall on the season, 3-7 in Hawkeye 10 conference play. Kuemper has another busy day on Tuesday, June 15th as they are scheduled to play another varsity doubleheader against Lewis Central.
