Area Softball Teams Go 2-5 Thursday Evening; Full Softball Recap

Carroll went toe to toe with number three ranked ADM in an instant classic, but fell just short of an upset Thursday night. ADM got the contest started by leading 2-0 after three innings. Carroll came close to scoring with a double, but left a runner on base in the bottom of the second. Camryn Schable started in the circle for Carroll where she kept the hits low and limited the ADM runs. In six innings pitched, Schable allowed three runs and one earned run off five hits and one walk while recording two strikeouts. 

Carroll in the bottom of the fourth got a two out rally with bases loaded and scored a runner to cut down the ADM lead to 2-1. Carroll shut down ADM offensively in the top of the fifth to give them a chance to tie the ball game up. Chloe Gallegos gave Carroll a great look as she grabbed an RBI single to tie up the game at 2-2. ADM grabbed the lead and more in the sixth and seventh, adding three runs to their total to lead once again at 5-2 after the top of the seventh. Carroll was down to their last out in the bottom of the seventh with runners in scoring position. Gallegos pop up a ball that was dropped by ADM allowing two Carroll runners to score, cutting down the ADM lead to 5-4. Carroll’s tying run was left on second as ADM closed out the game and ultimately won 5-4. 

Carroll fell to 10-13 on the season and 0-10 in Raccoon River Conference play. ADM improves to 15-4 overall on the season and 8-3 in Raccoon River 

Conference play. Carroll wraps up their week of play with a road game against Nevada on Friday, June 18th.

Kuemper at Harlan

Kuemper played well Thursday night, but came up short against Harlan. Harlan got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the second. Kuemper responded with a solo run of their own in the top of the third to tie up the ball game at 1-1. Chloe Venteicher started in the circle for Kuemper and through four innings pitched, allowed three earned runs off seven hits and recorded a strikeout. Harlan got the lead back in the bottom of the third with two more runs added to their total to lead 3-1. Kuemper once again tied up the ball game in the top of the fourth with two more runs added to their total, tying up the game at 3-3. Hailey Ostrander aided her team well going 3-4, recording a double and triple, an RBI and scored a run as well. 

Harlan wasted no time grabbing the lead once again with a solo run in the bottom of the fourth to lead once again at 4-3. Kuemper and Harlan both were unable to add scores to their totals in the fifth. Kamryn Venner replaced Venteicher in the fifth inning where in two innings pitched allowed one earned run off two hits and recorded three strikeouts. Harlan was able to slip a runner past the Kuemper defense to add to their lead at 5-3. Kuemper couldn’t find the answers in the top of the seventh for those two added runs, and ultimately Harlan won a tough and gritty battle 5-3. 

Harlan improves to 15-5 overall on the season and 9-2 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play as Kuemper falls to 10-8 overall on the season and 3-4 in Hawkeye Ten Conference play. The Knights are in action next when they entertain Boone on Friday, June 18th.

Audubon at Coon Rapids Bayard

Audubon and Coon Rapids Bayard clashed in a non-conference contest where Audubon picked up a dominant win Thursday night. Coon Rapids Bayard started off on good footing by getting the first six Audubon batters out and didn’t allow any batters on base. On offense, Coon Rapids Bayard got a runner on base in both the first and second, but were unable to score any runners. Cassidy Baker was left on third and Alaya Betts was left on second. 

In the top of the third, Audubon started the inning well with Kylee Hartl, Addie Hocker, and Mattie Nieslen getting base hits as Hocker and Nielsen grabbed RBIs. Katelyn Nielsen continued the good hitting for Audubon as she got a two RBI single to score Hannah Thygesen and Sydney Beymer. Audubon posted five runs and took a 5-0 lead. Audubon and Coon Rapids Bayard went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings, but Audubon grabbed another run in the top of the sixth as Thygesen scored Addie Hocker to give the Wheelers a 6-0 lead. Audubon wasn’t done scoring runs, they’d add two more in the top of the seventh when Jordan Porsch and Kali Irlmeier both scored off Hocker’s two RBI single to take an 8-0 lead. Coon Rapids Bayard got two on base in the bottom of the seventh and worked the count a few times, but Irlmeier and the Audubon defense closed out the game to win 8-0.

Audubon improves to 8-6 on the season as Coon Rapids Bayard falls to 5-9. Audubon continues their busy week with a home game against Missouri Valley on Friday, June 18th. Coon Rapids Bayard is also in action Friday, against Exira-EHK at home.

OA-BCIG at South Central Calhoun

South Central Calhoun made quick work of OA-BCIG Thursday as they picked up win number six on the season. OA-BCIG got the game started in the top of the first with a runner scored to take the early 1-0 lead. South Central Calhoun came out from the gate with run after run, racking up 11 runs in the bottom of the first. From the at bats for the Titans, Kortney Riley went 3-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, Sally Musselman went 3-3 as well with three runs scored, and Emma Anderson was a good base runner with three runs scored and going 2-2 in her at bats. 

Both teams held off in the second innings and didn’t add any runs to the board. OA-BCIG got run number two in the top of the third, cutting down the South Central Calhoun lead to 11-2. Musselman was not only a threat in the batters box, but also performed well in the circle, going three innings pitched and only allowed a single walk. The Titans in the bottom of the third continued their great scoring with three more runs to end the game in three innings with a score of 14-2. 

South Central Calhoun improves to 6-7 on the season. The Titans are off for the next few days and will get back to action on Tuesday, June 22 with a game on the road at Glidden-Ralston.

Ar-We-Va at River Valley

Ar-We-Va hung on tough Thursday night, but ultimately fell short against River Valley. The first half of the contest was all defensive efforts as both teams were unable to score a run in five innings. Ar-We-Va finally cracked through in the top of the sixth with two runs. River Valley also got themselves on the board in the sixth and cut down the Ar-We-Va lead down to 2-1. 

Ar-We-Va’s ability to get hits were limited in this game, but of the hits they got, they went the distance. Hannah Kraus got an RBI triple to score a runner and she scored a run herself while Jamie Hausman grabbed a triple of her own. Ar-We-Va added another run to their total in the top of the seventh to take a 3-1 lead late. River Valley swung the momentum back to their side as they scored two runners in the bottom of the seventh, tied the ball game at 3-3, and brought the game into extra innings. Ar-We-Va and River Valley fell short in the eighth and didn’t add any runs, and the Rockets had a tough top of the ninth and didn’t get a runner home. River Valley, with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, were able to get the walk off run and win 4-3 in the ninth inning. 

Ar-We-Va falls to 6-5 overall on the season. The Rockets are in action next when they welcome Boyer Valley on Monday, June 21st.

IKM-Manning faced off against Riverside on a hot and humid Thursday evening. Riverside started the game off by grabbing a 3-0 lead after three innings. IKM-Manning responded with a solo run in the top of the fourth, cutting down the Riverside lead to 3-1. Zoey Melton scored that run for the Wolves off a pitching error from Riverside. Brooke Booth was able to shut down the Riverside offense in the bottom of the fourth by not allowing any runners to score. Booth in this game allowed two earned runs off four hits. Riverside added another seven runs in the bottom of the fifth and ended the game in the sixth with one additional run to win 11-1.

IKM-Manning ends a long week of play with a home game against LoMa on Friday, June 18th.
