Joan Nehman, age 89 of Lytton, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, June 21, 2021, at Loring Hospital in Sac City, IA, surrounded by her husband and children.
Joan Mae Stangl was born on February 25, 1932, in Arcadia, IA, to parents Joseph and Anna (Loneman) Stangl, the youngest of seven children. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. Joan was raised in Carroll, IA, where she attended Catholic Elementary School and graduated from Carroll High School in 1950. As a young lady, she held various jobs to help the family; she had a very strong work ethic.
On August 10, 1957, Joan was united in marriage to Donald Nehman at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll. This union was blessed with five children: Paul, Ann Marie, Norma, Jane, and Paula. The story goes that when Don met Joan in Carroll, he sat down next to her and ‘accidentally’ touched her hand and the sparks flew! She and Don raised their children on a farm south of Lytton, IA, where she was able to stay at home and do what she did best, which was being a wife, mom, and an amazing homemaker. She was born a city girl but quickly became a farm loving lady.
Jo was a life-long member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City where she served as a Eucharistic Minister, on the ladies guild, and on the Christmas Decorating Committee. She was a member of the Lytton Legion Auxiliary, Lytton School Music Mothers, and along with Don, chaperoned many school events.
Jo was an avid card player belonging to several card clubs in Iowa and Florida, and she loved playing cards at family get-togethers. She bowled in ladies’ league and was a proud member of the Red Hat Ladies of Cross Creek. She loved traveling and as the kids were growing up, always made sure they went on family vacations. Later in life, Jo and Don bought a camper and enjoyed camping with their grandkids. The memories that were made doing those things will forever be in all of their hearts.
Jo always had a large garden which meant canning lots of goodies. She admired beautiful flowers. Sitting outside on the deck in the Florida sun and on the patio at the farm always brought her peace. She was an amazing bargain shopper and loved shopping at Bealls in Florida, where she and Don spent their winters for the past 25 years. She could find a good deal like no other! Being an Avon Representative for 30 years and collecting Stangl pottery also displayed her passion for shopping.
Jo loved so many things, but nothing brought her greater joy than spending time with her loved ones. She was so proud of her children, and even more proud of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her faith was deep and her love for the Lord was evident. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anna Stangl; parents-in-law Fred and Elnora Nehman; siblings: Myra (Pete) Lopez, Vincent (Marge) Stangl, daughter Kathy, Alton (Marian) Stangl, Ralph (Jane) Stangl, Ivan (Doreen and Marlene) Stangl; brother-in-law Doc O’Connor; sister-in-law Joretta (Kenneth) Hauser,daughter Cindy.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 25, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sac City, IA, with Fr. Joe Dillinger, Fr. Larry McCarty, and Deacon Butch Stone officiating. Burial will be in the Oakland Cemetery in Sac City under the direction of Farber & Otteman Funeral Home of Sac City. Visitation will be held from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 24, 2021, at the funeral home with a Vigil Service starting at 7:00 p.m.
IN LIEU OF FLOWERS memorials received will be donated to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Lytton Fire Department, and the Lytton American Legion by the family in memory of Jo
